When someone you know needs that special thought, why not light a candle? You may wish to write a message; perhaps you will find a suitable card here. This idea is relatively new at St Stephen's but has been well received.
Lighting a candle is a prayer, a sign of God's presence amoung us. At Baptism we receive a lighted candle as the preist says, “Receive the light of Christ”. Lighting a candle symbolises sincerity and determination to bring personal problems or concerns for others before God. It also symblolises our union with Christ, the Light of the World. Candles can also be lit in thanksgiving. The candle consuming itself is a representation of sacrifice.
While we carry on our daily duties, the lighted candle burns as a constant prayer. The candle “keeps vigil” in the church while we cannot continue to be present. Although we may go far away from the candle, we continue our prayers. If you need a special card, or would like a candle to be lit in your absence please just ask.
You will find the candles and cards next to the Book of Remembrance in the Children's Corner.
All donations go to the
St Stephen's Church Restoration Fund.
