'Ermm, I'm thinking of decorating Church, anyone interested?'
What a question! Harold Berry didn't realise what he was asking when he popped the question to the Congregation one Sunday morning. The ceiling had been condemned and agreement had been made to repair it. While the scaffolding was up Harold's idea was to paint the walls - and just carry on and then paint the whole interior. Why not?
Now that idea seems easy but have you seen the size of the walls? A few of the men donned their gear and paintbrushes and off they started on a feat not unlike painting the Sistine Chapel. We regularly saw Tommy Rogers at the top of ladders so far up it made us dizzy to look and George Maunders preparing the Altar to be painted with tender loving care. Bob Grant seemed to have left home and moved in and Harold just beavered away! The ladies decided to re-decorate the font, pulpit and columns, paintbrushes and palettes in hand.
All very simple in theory but there was washing down to be done, preparation, plastering, tiling and other jobs. The painting was relatively straightforward, just lots of it , but behind every artist is an army of cleaners, people to tidy up, and other background workers. It really had become a combined effort.
Everyone looked forward to their next visit to see how work had progressed and the face-lift became the most talked about item in Kearsley. The Church had open doors every day and people loved to pop in to see how we were doing.
The main interior restoration is now complete. Not only the Church has benefited : we feel re-newed also. Now we have turned our thoughts to the tower repair that is needed urgently.
So you see restoration is far reaching............
